Amidst all the doom and gloom caused by Covid-19, the need for some relaxation and calmness has increased manifolds. Continuous pouring in of negative news about death and disease wreaked by the deadly virus is pressing heavily upon the nerves. It is no brainer that light- heartedness helps calm the stressed nerves and rejuvenate the drooping spirits among the people. So, in a light hearted vein, let us deliberate upon some of the visible impacts of this invisible virus.
In the wake of lockdowns across the globe, economic activities came to a hault. As a result, most of the businesses experienced a sudden deep dip with only few exceptions. However, the businesses related to beauty industry which predominantly cater to the needs of womenfolk remained least effected in the post outbreak period. Quite interestly, businesses ranging from cosmetics to haute couture witnessed a step up for the same period whereas other businesses were closing down. This situation goes hand in hand with what happened during and after the great depression of 1930, when all the businesses perished with the exclusion of business ventures associated with the beauty industry.
Chauvinists are not allowed to make a point here. Neither it shows women to be inherently insecure of their outlook nor it implies that fear of looking bad is far greater than the fear of dying of an ugly virus. On the contrary, the fact is women are more into self-care and self-love. No pun intended.
In the resilience of beauty industry businesses, new start-ups, who are always in search of a wonderful business idea, may find a golden tip. Choose a niche from the beauty business and you are already half way through. Make a skin whitening cream or even a promise to make one will leave you wallowing in wealth. Pun intended.
Enough of the beautiful women and the beauty industry, next comes the mushroom growth of new cooking channels on youtube during recent lockdown. It is interesting to note that a number of big-wigs from showbiz, fashion and media industry have made their way into youtube as cooking experts and connoisseurs. Mostly, they are found sharing the most exotic and rarest recepies straight from their grandmother who breathed her last some half a century ago.
Why everyone is turning up as a chef is simply because, quite generically, every house has a built-in kitchen. All it takes to start recording as a cook or chef is to borrow an apron and you are all set to go. Just cook a hell out of your pan and get millions of views for your videos just because you are damn good at acting or designing dresses for tomboys. Professional cooks and chefs on youtube need to look for some other ways for their bread and butter due to rapidly shrinking space at the hands of these actors, anchors and designers turned chefs. As the taste of the pudding lies in its eating, their viewers are too star struck to try and appraise what is cooked by their idols. No one is interested in the food anyway. So both the chefs and the fans are happy as the pudding never gets tasted.
Done with the cooking on youtube by the ones who should be doing anything but cooking, lockdown and social distancing inspired memes on social media are the next big thing. One may easily find a fairly large number of funny memes and trolls while surfing. To illustrate one of them, there was a picture of overly crowded Raja Bazar Rawalpindi teeming with thousands of people in utter disregard of social distancing with a worried and anxious Coronavirus emoji pasted on it saying," i am confused whom to infect and whom not to". Another meme popped up while mindlessly scrolling down the facebook account. Again, there was a picture of a public transport bus jampacked with passengers mocking the government instructions. The caption read like this,"battling the Coronavirus the right way, leaving no room for the virus to get into the bus."
No nugget of wisdom for the day, however, if you must need one as you have struggled reading till the end. Let me tell you, there is one, go and get a chicken nugget instead.
